FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING OVERVIEW

The Financial Accounting (FI) module is the core module within the financials application. Almost all functionality that resides in the other financial application modules relies on the implementation of at least parts of the FI module. Financial Accounting is designed to provide financial information from an external view. The main FI components offer functionality for the general ledger, accounts receivables and accounts payables, asset management, a special ledger used to meet user specific requirements, funds management, and legal consolidations. The general ledger (G/L) houses the chart of accounts as well as the account balances and line items. The G/L tracks all transactional postings, such as inventory updates, sales revenues, bank accounts, and expenses. Accounts Receivable (AR) and Accounts Payable (AP) are subledgers of the G/L that support the processes involved with the collection of revenues and payments of expenses. Combined AR and AP facilitate maintaining customer or vendor records, account balances and line items, payments, clearing, advice notices, dunning, interest calculations, check releases, and over/underpayment management. The AR/AP information systems support reporting for due date breakdown, payment history, days sales outstanding, overdue items, and currency risk. Asset management is another subledger to the G/L that focuses on the management of the fixed assets in an organization. Asset management maintains the master records for the assets, special valuations, country-specific requirements, and four types of depreciation calculations, one of which is for cost depreciation. The special ledger functionality supports the ability to create other ledgers or subledgers for specific user requirements. Special ledgers can pull information from other modules and can support simplistic allocations. In addition to the ledgers and subledgers, FI contains functionality supporting funds management and legal consolidations. Funds management provides the capabilities to define planned revenues and expenses for the management areas, monitor these transactions as compared to available funds, and prevent exceeding the budget. Once all transactions have been completed, consolidations can be performed. Legal consolidations functionality supports providing consolidated financial information for companies and business areas. Business areas are utilized primarily for external reporting of business segments across companies.

CONTROLLING OVERVIEW
The Controlling (CO) module is the symbiotic counter to the FI module and is designed to provide financial information from an internal managerial accounting view. To support this view of accounting, the CO module offers functionality for cost center accounting, activity-based costing, order and project accounting, product costing, and profitability analysis. Cost center accounting focuses on showing the expenses of the organization from a departmental view for the purpose of supporting responsibility accounting. Cost center accounting also supports the planning, budgeting, controlling, and allocation of departmental expenses. Additionally, many organizations desire to show the expenses of the organization within a process view. This process-oriented view is supported by the activity-based costing component. Within organizations, costs might be incurred to support events and overheadrelated projects. The order and project accounting capabilities of CO support planning, monitoring, capturing, and allocating the expenses related to these events. For production-related organizations, many of the cost centers capture expenses that later will be attributed to products to determine product costs. The product costing component of the CO module focuses on the creation of the standard product cost estimates, charging of overhead to production, capturing actual costs of production, calculating production variances, and settling production expenses to the appropriate profitability market segment. All of the expense objects —cost center, process, event or project, and products—allocate or settle costs to the profitability analysis component, which supports the generation of market profit and loss (P/L) statements at a gross and contribution margin level. The next section provides more details on the CO module components, especially for ABC.
SAP HANA is an in-memory data platform that is deployable as an on-premise appliance, or in the cloud.  It is a revolutionary platform that’s best suited for performing real-time analytics, and developing and deploying real-time applications. At the core of this real-time data platform is the SAP HANA database which is fundamentally different than any other database engine in the market today (figure 1).

Figure 1:        SAP HANA - platform for a new class of real-time analytics and applications
Whenever companies have to go deep within their data sets to ask complex and interactive questions, and have to go broad (which means working with enormous data sets that are of different types and from different sources) at the same time, SAP HANA is well-suited. Increasingly there is a need for this data to be recent and preferably in real-time. Add to that the need for high speed (very fast response time and true interactivity), and the need to do all this without any pre-fabrication (no data preparation, no pre-aggregates, no-tuning) and you have a unique combination of requirements that only SAP HANA can address effectively. When this set of needs or any subset thereof have to be addressed (in any combination), SAP HANA is in its elements.

Analytics and Applications

  1. Real-time analytics – The Categories of Analytics which HANA specializes
    1. Operational Reporting (real-time insights from transaction systems such as custom or SAP ERP). This covers Sales Reporting (improving fulfillment rates and accelerating key sales processes), Financial Reporting (immediate insights across revenue, customers, accounts payable, etc.), Shipping Reporting (better enabling complete stock overview analysis), Purchasing Reporting (complete real-time analysis of complete order history) and Master Data Reporting (real-time ability to impact productivity and accuracy).
    2. Data Warehousing (SAP NetWeaver BW on HANA) – BW customers can run their entire BW application on the SAP HANA platform leading to unprecedented BW performance (queries run 10-100 times faster; data loads 5-10 times faster; calculations run 5-10 times faster), a dramatically simplified IT landscape (leads to greater operational efficiency and reduced waste), and a business community able to make faster decisions. Moreover, not only is the BW investment of these customers preserved but also super-charged. Customers can migrate with ease to the SAP HANA database without impacting the BW application layer at all.
    3. Predictive and Text analysis on Big Data - To succeed, companies must go beyond focusing on delivering the best product or service and uncover customer/employee /vendor/partner trends and insights, anticipate behavior and take proactive action. SAP HANA provides the ability to perform predictive and text analysis on large volumes of data in real-time. It does this through the power of its in-database predictive algorithms and its R integration capability. With its text search/analysis capabilities SAP HANA also provides a robust way to leverage unstructured data.

  1. Real-time applications – The Categories of Applications which HANA specializes
    1. Core process accelerators – Accelerate business reporting by leveraging ERP Accelerators, which are non-disruptive ways to take advantage of in-memory technology. These solutions involve an SAP HANA database sitting next to a customer’s SAP ERP system. Transactional data is replicated in real-time from ECC into HANA for immediate reporting, and then results can even be fed back into ECC. Solutions include CO-PA Accelerator, Finance and Controlling Accelerator, Customer Segmentation Accelerator, Sales Pipeline Analysis, and more.
    2. Planning, Optimization Apps – SAP HANA excels at applications that require complex scheduling with fast results, and SAP is delivering solutions that no other vendor can match. These include Sales & Operational Planning, BusinessObjects Planning & Consolidation, Cash Forecasting, ATP calculation, Margin calculation,  Manufacturing scheduling optimization (from start-up Optessa), and more.
    3. Sense & response apps – These applications offer real-time insights on Big Data such as smart meter data, point-of-sale data, social media data, and more. They involve complexities such as personalized insight and recommendations, text search and mining, and predictive analytics. Only SAP HANA is well suited for such applications, including Smart Meter Analytics, SAP Supplier InfoNet, SAP precision retailing, and Geo-spatial Visualization apps (from start-up Space-Time Insight). Typically these processes tend to be data-intensive and many could not be deployed in the past owing to cost and performance constraints.

What is the secret sauce?

Other database management systems on the market are typically either good at transactional workloads, or analytical workloads, but not both. When transactional DBMS products are used for analytical workloads, they require you to separate your workloads into different databases (OLAP and OLTP). You have to extract data from your transactional system (ERP), transform that data for reporting, and load it into a reporting database (BW). The reporting database still requires significant effort in creating and maintaining tuning structures such as aggregates and indexes to provide even moderate performance.

Due to its hybrid structure for processing transactional workloads and analytical workloads fully in-memory, SAP HANA combines the best of both worlds. You don’t need to take the time to load data from your transactional database into your reporting database, or even build traditional tuning structures to enable that reporting. As transactions are happening, you can report against them live. By consolidating two landscapes (OLAP and OLTP) into a single database, SAP HANA provides companies with massively lower TCO in addition to mind-blowing speed.
Figure 2:        Broad Portfolio of SAP HANA enabled Solutions – Like “Games” on the “Xbox”

But even more important is the new application programming paradigm enabled for “extreme” applications. Since the SAP HANA database resides entirely in-memory all the time, additional complex calculations, functions and data-intensive operations can happen on the data directly in the database, without requiring time-consuming and costly movements of data between the database and applications.  This incredible simplification and optimization of the data layer is the “killer feature” of SAP HANA because it removes multiple layers of technology and significant human effort to get incredible speed.  It also has the benefit of reducing the overall TCO of the entire solution.

Some other database engines on the market today might claim to provide one or another benefit that SAP HANA brings. However, none of them can deliver on all of them. This is real-time computing, and customers can take advantage of this today via SAP BW on SAP HANA, Accelerators on SAP HANA and native SAP HANA applications (figure 2).

SAP Financial Accounting (FI) is an important core module where in live-time, the financial processing transactions are all captured to provide the basis via which data is drawn for external reporting. This SAP FI Module is integrated with many parallel modules that enable a company to unify processes that may have needed the utilization of many software packages.
Controlling(CO)is the term by which SAP refers to“Managerial Accounting”.The Organizational Elements in CO are Operating Concern, Controlling Area, and Cost Centers. Hence, the SAP CO Module helps management by providing reports on cost centers, profit centers, contribution margins, profitability, etc. It focuses on internal users, in contrast to FI – which focuses on data drawn for external reporting. The transactions posted in FI are transferred to CO for cost accounting processing, analytical reporting, and audit-controlling spectrum.

Many reports are simply built on a SQL query, that mostly can be restricted via select options. A report puts the result usually into an ABAP list, ALV list or ALV grid. The core of the report is the query itself, the rest is always the same boring and repetitive work: definition of types, declaration of variables and internal tables, displaying the output. Putting this together takes at least a few hours, or even one or two days. Now there a new tool that can amazingly accelerate the implementation of reports: you only have to write the query, and the program will generate the complete ABAP source code of the report! This can reduce the development time to a few minutes.

The Hovitaga Report Generator is built on top of the Hovitaga OpenSQL Editor so they have basically the same UI

The Report Generator can also execute OpenSQL queries, for further details see the blog post about the SQL Editor. Here I will present only the generation of reports.

The first step is to build the OpenSQL query. You can use aggregator functions, aliases, join several tables, build a complex WHERE clause and so on. Basically every syntactically correct SELECT statement is allowed. You can instantly execute it to check if it works correctly. Then you have to choose the settings for the report to be generated:

You have to enter the program name and report title, and optionally the transaction code. You can choose to create a new dictionary structure for the output list – otherwise the structure will be defined locally in the program. The report generator detects which tables are accessed in the query, and the fields of the tables are shown in a list. You can choose which fields shall be displayed as parameters or select options on the selection screen of the new report.

You can decide what kind of output you would like to use: the most populars are probably the ALV list and the class based ALV grid. It is also possible to generate the frame of event handler methods for the selected control. Later on you can modify the generated report and add your own coding to the method body.

The report can be created locally or assigned to a package and a transport request, you will see the standard dialogs that are shown when saving a report. The report is exactly as any other ABAP program you have created manually. The coding is easy to read and can be enhanced or modified any time:

In this three parts of series you will learn how to build a web dynpro component and navigate between different views with in the component. In this part of the series we will move on to learn more complicated scenarios where one component is embedded into another component.
